...and Cracow - a cultural capital of Poland
Cracow is a unique city, which was founded on the place where the main trade routes of
medieval Europe crossed. Traditions of burghers, religious and cultural tolerance go back
to the 13th century. Through over 550 years Cracow was a capital city of Poland. It is a city
of John Paul II who was deeply attached to Cracow all his life - as a university student,
scholar, priest, archbishop and cardinal.
The fact that the monuments remain in excellent state and were not destroyed by the
second world war was the reason why the city was placed on the UNESCO list. Among
these monuments are: St. Mary’s Basilica from the 14th century with the main altar called
“Bible of Linden Tree” created by Wit Stwosz, Renaissance Royal Castle, and coronation cathedral of Polish monarchs in Wawel, Market Square (the largest market square in the Old Continent), Jagiellonian University – one of the earliest universities in the world, medieval
town walls, and many, many others. The “Lady with an Ermine” by Leonardo da Vinci, a
globe with the first image of America, an Egyptian mummy, a woolly rhinoceros, a Copernicus book – these are only a few examples of numerous treasures of Cracow museums.
