HOW TO REACH LISBON
By Air
Lisbon International Airport (LIS) is located eight kilometres (five
miles) from central Lisbon. The Airport is a busy, one-terminal European
airport that is used by a large number of the major airlines.
By Road
Arriving in Lisbon by road is a pleasant experience, as the visitor
can enjoy the beautiful countryside along the way. The city has good
road accesses and the most frequently used routes are: the A1 motorway,
the 25 April Bridge, the new Vasco da Gama bridge, and the CREL, the
outer ring road for the Lisboa region.
By Train
Scores of national and international trains arrive in Lisbon every day.
In addition to Santa Apolónia terminal station, the city now
has the new Gare do Oriente, which opened in 1998 adjacent to the Parque
das Nações. Both stations have direct bus or underground
connections to the city centre. Intercity trains connect all of Portugal’s
major cities to Lisbon.
GETTING AROUND
Lisbon is a city rich in monuments, artistic places and other beauties.
Most of these are located in the historical city centre. The best way
to visit Lisbon is by public transportation.
Public Transportation
Buses, trams and subways are available and operate from 06:00 or 07:00
a.m. until midnight or 01 a.m. Tourist Passes for 1, 3 or 7 days are
valid for trams, buses and underground.
Metro
One of the quickest way to travel in Lisbon is by Metro. It covers almost
the whole city.
Buses
An extensive network of 90 bus and tram routes covers the entire city
and outskirts.
Tickets are cheaper if bought in advance at major bus stops or kiosks
rather than in the bus.
Taxis
Taxis are available any time in the city. Average fare within the city
centre is Euro 8,00-15,00.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION
Currency and Exchange
As a member of the European Union, Portugal’s currency is the
Euro (e). The banks are open from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. from Monday to
Friday. The bank at the airport is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
Money can also be changed at bureaux de change or automatic exchange
machines. International credit cards are widely accepted.
Climate and Clothing
Lisbon has a moderate Atlantic climate. The weather in June is usually
warm (average 28° to 32° C). Light clothing is suitable with
some warmer clothing for the evening.
