Two Steps into Basel
Remarkable cities have remarkable History
Basel history starts with the Celts establishing the first core of the future town, and goes on under the Romans, the Alemans, the Frank. The name “Basilia” was first mentioned in 374 d.c. under the Emperor Valentin I.
The first bridge on the Rhine was built in the 13th, the first University of Switzerland in 1460.
Basel joined the Swiss Confederation in 1501.
Thus a European centre of culture, trade and finance arose out of a fortified settlement
The Old Town is the very soul of the city, where imposing medieval buildings survived through the Ages and contributed to form the characteristical mixture of architectural styles which make Basel recognizable.
Among these there are the Cathedral (founded in 1006) and the Rathaus (1504-1514).

Another characteristic aspect of the town is its being split apart by the Rhine in two parts, Kleiner Basel and Grosser Basel, which keep trace of the different social classes that dwelled there in the different styles of the buildings.
The Rhine has always been of great consequence in Basel financial and economical development.
On the right hand side of the Rhine, in cosmopolitan Kleiner Basel, the alternative cultural scene is situated. On the left hand side of the river, in Grosser Basel, there is the town center which is situated around the market place. The well-preserved old town with its original shops and elegant boutiques invites you to stroll, the regions near the border (Schwarzwald and Alsace) and the rural region of Basel are ideal for excursions.
Basel has always shown a deep concern for art and architecture, and in fact it was the first town to establish a public art collection.
This is quite evident if we consider that many modern buildings too were designed by famous architects all over the world. |

The town also takes advantage of its wonderful position, being the crossroad among France, Germany and Switzerland itself, that nurtured a unique cultural blend and the mixture of different traditions and costumes.
