How to get around Milan
Milan boasts the country’s most efficient and best planned public
transport network, featuring subway, trolley-buses, tram and buses.
To use the public transport only one ticket is needed, which is valid
for 75 minutes. Special tickets give unlimited use of all public transport
for one whole day.
Public Transport
The cost of the over-ground and underground transport is the same. Tickets
can be bought from news-stands, bars, tobacconists and from automatic
vending machines, but not in buses. Public transport runs from approximately
6.00 hours until 24.00 hours, and there is a bus service that replaces
Line 1 of the Underground at night.
Taxis
Taxis in Milan are white and park in ranks supplied with a telephone
(the numbers can be found in the telephone directory under Taxi). Taxis
can also be called via radiotaxi switchboards on the following numbers:
026767; 028383; 025353; 023100. Because of the frequent changes made
to the tariffs, you should read carefully the information shown inside
the taxi.
Subway
Entrance to subway stations can be recognized by an orange-red sign
with MM in white on it - MM stands for Metropolitana Milanese. The subways
has three lines: MM1 (red line) - MM2 (green line) - MM3 (yellow line)
Shopping in Milan
The large department stores and many shops in the center stay open all
day. Shops are closed on Monday morning and Sunday. In contrast, food
shops are closed on Monday afternoon and Sunday.
Climate and Clothing
June weather in Milan is generally sunny and warm. The temperature often
rises during the day at an average of 28°. Light summer clothing
is most suitable.
Currency
The currency for the Conference is the Euro. Other currencies will be
accepted during the Conference at the official exchange rate at the
time of the Conference.
Banks
Banks are open from Monday to Friday from 08.30 to 13.30 hours, and
again in the afternoon from 15.00 to 16.00 hours (afternoon opening
may vary by about a quarter of an hour depending on the bank).
Banks are closed on Saturday and Sunday. Many banks have automatic currency
exchange machines that also take credit cards.
Most hotels, restaurants and shops accept foreign currency and major
credit cards.
Post Office
The opening times of the post office are: Monday to Friday from 08.30
to 15.30 hours; Saturday from 08.30 to 12.00 hours.
Voltage
Electricity in Italy is mostly 220 volts 50 Hz. Foreign appliances could
require an adapter.
Tipping
Service is usually included in the bill in bars and restaurants, but
tips are welcome.
